It’s a wild ride this parenting stuff- challenging and brilliant, invigorating and draining.
Soo… when it comes to quality time spent with stinkers, I’m always brainstorming. There is certainly a time and a place for limited screens in our house, and sure, sometimes a kid just needs to zone out a little. But the most revealing and interesting memories my kids and I create together, usually involve time spent engaged in imagination and in the moment. My top 5 favorite scree-free activities:
Dragon Eggs – Good for toddlers and up
These fizzy favorites make awesome party favors!
Add ¼ tsp water and 3 drops of food coloring to ½ cup of baking soda. Mix well. Add 2 tablespoons citric acid powder. Mix well. Add 1¼ tsp cooking oil. Compact the mixture in your hand, add a small dragon, and mold into egg shape. Let eggs dry over night. Submerge in warm water to hatch!
Dance Party- Good for ages 0-100
Everyone write 2 or three songs on pieces of scrap paper and put them in a cup. Take turns drawing songs out of the cup to dance to. Be sure to get some videos!
Act Out a Story- Good for ages 0-100
Grab a favorite picture book and read through it once. Then bring the story to life by pretending you are the characters’. You can journey through your house, outside, or even off site to a park. Get creative! A few we really like are Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag and Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crocket Johnson.
Catch fireflies!- Good for ages 0-100
Use an empty jar with breathing holes poked into the lid. See who can catch the most!
Family Photo Puzzles! - Good for toddlers and up
Convert a favorite picture of the kids into a puzzle at printerstudio.com. When you’re finished putting it together, you can frame it and hang it in the house or give it as a gift!
Any time we can spend with our little yogis is invaluable! So play on!
